The green green grass of home is certainly not a metaphor for Irish weddings, which are anything but ‘green’, according to our recent survey.
Every year, there are around 22,000 weddings in Ireland. While it’s wonderful to think that every year there are 22,000 new happy couples starting their lives together, it turns out that the choices we make when planning our weddings can have a huge impact on the environment, producing as many CO2 emissions as five people in one year!
At Stonechat Jewellers, we surveyed over 250 recently married people to find out more about the typical decor and food at Irish weddings. We then analysed the data and inflated the numbers, to see what that would look like when applied to the 22,000 weddings that take place in Ireland each year.
Before we break down the data, let’s remember it’s not all doom and gloom! In fact, sustainable weddings can end up looking and feeling a lot more unique—meanwhile you can leave your venue with a guilt-free conscience. Let’s face it, we don’t know anyone who doesn’t feel a pang of guilt watching wedding staff dispose of hundreds of plastic boxes, plates, or cups.
