BlogRemodelling Old Jewellery
On my first visit to Stonechat, I had a selection of jewellery with me that was dated and ‘of its time’. I was interested in retaining its history and sentimental significance, but wanted it to be remodelled and crafted into some contemporary pieces. I had read about Stonechat and made an appointment for a consultation. I found Ann Chapman, the proprietor of the shop, to be so professional in her approach to me. She understood that I felt sad and apprehensive about handing over a bag of miscellaneous bits and pieces that contained so many memories from my past. She had a welcoming smile that put me at ease and proceeded to have a conversation with me about the different pieces and their histories. She is so aware that jewellery is a personal thing and that it tells the story of the person who is wearing it, so she actively listened, questioned, probed and reflected.
Ann’s expertise as a designer goldsmith then came to the fore as she put forward options, made suggestions, offered advice and as we chatted created designs on paper for discussion and analysis. She followed these up with more professional designs forwarded by email. On my return visit to the store, having had time to familiarise myself with the different designs, Ann tweaked and reconstructed the originals to suit my taste, needs and budget. She did not stop until she knew for sure that I was completely satisfied with the designs. It is difficult to describe the joy I felt when I saw the final pieces. It was wonderful to see beautifully handcrafted contemporary pieces encapsulating all the memories of significant events in my past, now remodelled and infused with new life and beauty.
The ‘Stepping Stone’ pendant and matching earrings hold a special place in my heart because, as Ann explains, each stone reflects personal progress and the ability to move forward in life, through highs and lows. For me, they are a beautiful acknowledgement and tribute to the shaping influences of my life.
