While a classic engagement ring can look beautiful and can be the perfect fit for some people, others are tired of seeing the same style of ring on every person they know and are looking for something a little more unique.

We wouldn’t all go out wearing the same dress on a Saturday night so why should your jewellery be any different?!
A modern engagement ring can be much more true to your personal style and individual taste and the great thing is that with so many different styles of modern engagement rings you are unlikely to have the same ring as your friend/colleague!
Below is a quick guide on modern engagement rings…
SETTING STYLES
The setting is what really sets modern engagement rings apart from the more traditional choices. Minimalist, simple, clean lines – contemporary settings are not fussy and let the stone speak for itself.

Simple Bezel Setting

SHAPE
Why not opt for an unusual shape ring instead of a straight edge one? A curved band can be really unique and look very elegant on the hand. If you choose a shaped engagement ring you will need to have the wedding ring made to sit with it – this can look stunning but make sure you try the two together when choosing the engagement ring to make sure that you love the finished look.

COLOUR
Platinum & diamond rings are hugely popular now, so much so that it can be difficult to find a coloured gemstone engagement rings in traditional jewellery stores. Opting for a coloured stone can lead to a much more unique engagement ring. There are so many choices in beautiful gemstones nowadays from the soft pink of morganite to a rich chocolate brown, petrol blue indigolite and vibrant pink tourmaline. The choices are endless!
Rose gold is also a lovely choice – it complements the tones of pink/champagne/chocolate colour stones beautifully. Yellow gold is stunning with the golden tones of citrine and olive green tourmaline while white metal shows vibrant blues, greens and pinks up beautifully.

WEDDING RING
A well designed contemporary ring will have been made with the wedding ring in mind. It is, afterall, how the ring will be worn for most of its life! I can’t say it enough – it is so important to try matching wedding rings when you are choosing your engagement ring. You have to love the engagement ring and wedding ring separately and also together.
Here are some examples of how beautifully the two rings can look together.

The most important thing when choosing your engagement ring is that it suits your style. I always advise customers to think of it as a piece of jewellery that they have to love not as a ring that has to fit certain criteria to make it socially acceptable as an engagement ring.
One hesitation women often have is whether the ring will look dated in 30/40 years’ time. My answer is always the same – it is unlikely that any ring you choose in 2014 will be in fashion in 2054 but so long as you love it that shouldn’t matter.
